A pig’s life

Pork is the most consumed meat in France, Europe and in the World. White ham is the French favorite piece. Along with chicken, it is the cheapest meat available. But at what cost?

26 millions of pigs are slaughtered each year in France, 95 % of them grow up in battery farming, inside closed sheds. To grow up fast and to die young : birth, fattening, slaughtering… after a short 5 to 6 months life for butcher pigs and 2 years for sows that “produce” more than 60 piglets. An intensive system, productivist, perfectly ran in, where every single gram is counted. On the menu : nitrites, food additives, preservatives, colouring, antibiotics, E hepatite virus… From birth to ham slice, The Muckracker explores the itinerary of a pig within this concentration camp universe which grinds animals and brings the men down to satisfy consumers apetite.
