ZAHIA, A STEP AHEAD

On June 3, 2022, Zahia Ziouani is invited to perform with her Symphony Orchestra in one of Europe’s most beautiful venues: the Philharmonie de Paris. It is a tremendous challenge for a conductor who may be the only one capable of leading 120 musicians — including 30 young people from disadvantaged suburbs — along with 400 choristers, half of whom are amateurs. As we follow, in immersion, the preparation of this exceptional event, an intimate portrait of Zahia Ziouani gradually emerges. We discover how a young girl passionate about music, who was by no means destined to become a conductor, grew into a powerful and committed woman, devoted entirely to others and to her Art.

This film tells the extraordinary story of Zahia Ziouani — a woman, a mother, the daughter of Algerian immigrant parents, and a conductor. She has succeeded like no other in popularizing and democratizing classical music through her Divertimento Symphony Orchestra in Seine-Saint-Denis. Beyond the story of a dream come true, the film reveals a life shaped by constant struggles to make classical music accessible to everyone.
