The general public knows Alfred Hitchcock only as a giant of cinema. He was the master of suspense, mischievous and witty, obsessed with blondes in distress, and reputed to be a tyrant with his actors. He was cinema’s supreme magician and a television star, as capable of making us laugh as of frightening us. But who knows the real Hitchcock? At his last public appearance, “Hitch” paid tribute to the woman who had been his wife, the mother of his child, his co-writer, his editor and his lifelong partner, Alma Reville Hitchcock. Behind the famous silhouette, there were two Hitchcocks. They were so inseparable that together they plotted undisputed masterpieces, in a true collaboration that never ceased, from the day they met until the end of their lives. This film revisits the legend and sheds new light on it through the lens of that intensely close relationship. We explore the role women played in the director’s career. Alma’s, of course, as his harshest, closest and most brilliant critic, but also that of the stars and collaborators who helped bring his work to life.
