WHO DOES THE HOUSEWORK?

In France, according to INSEE, women in heterosexual relationships take on 75% of household and parenting duties. While some may believe that things have changed in recent years, that we have entered a more equal era, the figures tell a very different story.
In Who does the housework?, filmmaker Safaa Aboufares draws on her own experience to understand why, even today, the home remains a deeply unequal territory.
Guided by her voice—at once humorous and clear-eyed—she meets people who are each, in their own way, trying to reinvent how everyday responsibilities are shared.
Blending live-action footage with stop-motion sequences, the film uses a dollhouse to embody the filmmaker’s inner voice. This playful yet sharp miniature theater humorously reenacts scenes of domestic life and provides the film’s narrative structure.
Through confidences, arguments, and moments of awakening, the film sheds light on the invisible mechanisms of domestic domination and sketches out possible paths toward a genuine household revolution.
